The constraint is useful: one adult vegan, one gluten-intolerant, four children. I prioritised atmosphere and local character, then marked how much confidence I have in the dietary fit.
Diet note: “gluten-friendly” here never means certified coeliac-safe. Buckwheat galettes are naturally gluten-free ingredients, for example, but shared kitchens and cooking surfaces can still create cross-contact. Call if the intolerance is severe.

My strongest nearby food pick
Crêperie Les Bannières · Chevreuse
Current schedule publishedVegan options reportedAsk about gluten cross-contact
Historic, charming and exactly the kind of ordinary-French experience visitors remember. The official site currently says Tuesday–Saturday evening, plus Friday/Saturday/Sunday lunch; Monday and Sunday evening closed. It asks guests to reserve by phone.
I would absolutely keep this on the list. From home≈ 15–20 min driveAddress16 rue de Versailles, 78460 ChevreusePhone01 30 52 25 51For your tableAsk for vegan galette possibilities + whether a clean plate/griddle protocol is possible for gluten intolerance.Official siteMap / route
Le Bistrot du Jardinier · Les Mesnuls
Wed–Sun scheduleCall for dietary needs
The setting is the reason to go: a village bistrot by the park, easy with children who need to move. The Les Mesnuls municipal page currently lists Wed–Sat 09:00–20:00 and Sunday 10:00–16:00.
Yes — this looks like a nice discovery. I would phone before promising the vegan/gluten combination. From home≈ 10–15 min driveAddress13 Grande Rue, Les MesnulsPhone01 30 41 04 20Current town listingMap / route
Jardin du Kashmir · Chevreuse
Official site currentBest mixed-diet fallback
Traditional North Indian cooking, colourful enough to feel like an outing and usually much easier to navigate for a vegan diner. Their current site lists lunch and dinner every day but Wednesday.
Not “French”, but probably your least stressful restaurant if everyone needs a real choice. From home≈ 15–20 minAddress20 rue de Rambouillet, ChevreusePhone01 30 52 71 98AskWhich vegetable dishes contain ghee/cream; which sauces or fried items have gluten exposure.Official siteMap / route

The splurge question
Abbaye des Vaux-de-Cernay
BeautifulVery expensive brunchBook + pre-arrange diets
Your feeling that it may be “a bit much” is fair. The official FAQ currently prices the weekend/holiday Réfectoire brunch at €145 per adult and €70 per child under 12, open to outside visitors by reservation.
For your exact group (4 adults + 4 children under 12), that is about €860 before anything extra. It includes access to a selection of estate activities, but at that price the Abbaye has to be the event.
I would choose Breteuil/Versailles + a great meal instead, unless the adults actively want the luxury-hotel experience. Official FAQMap / route
August trap
One to cross out now
La Terrasse de Sauvegrain / Manoir de Sauvegrain: the establishment’s own site announces annual closure from Sunday 9 August through Sunday 30 August 2026 inclusive, reopening Monday 31 August. Don’t build a meal around it this visit.

Chevreuse is the useful food cluster: Les Bannières and Jardin du Kashmir can pair naturally with the Château de la Madeleine or a walk by the Yvette.
